When you are in public and glance at someone who looks out of the ordinary you would call them weird. Why? Is it because of the color of their skin or the clothes they wear, they may look weird to you but some people understand why they look or dress the way that they do. In The Book “Monster”, written by Walter Dean Myers, one man stands out to people in a big way and everyone judges him by what he looks like on the outside.
When someone is dressed or looks the way they do don’t be too quick to judge them because there is always a reason. The intro of the book makes it seem almost impossible for a young man Steve Harmon, 17, who is on trial for murder impossible to be declared not-guilty. Everyone in the court room including the jury takes one look at Steve and decides that he did the crime because of the color of his skin. I have felt the way that stave has one time when I was at school, they pulled 5 people into the office because someone did something in the locker room and they thought that it was one of us. The other four guys in the office were wearing ties because they had a basketball game after school and I was wearing my jeans down low and a skater t-shirt, they thought for a fact that it had to be me. I said to myself there was no getting out of this one and in that situation I think I felt like Steve except for in a less serious situation.
In this book there are many lessons, but I think that one of the main lessons is that society is not always fair to people. Walter Dean years did an extraordinary job in the aspect that he really captured what it felt like to feel insecure about yourself. When you read this book it really puts you inside the main characters body and it makes you wonder if the writer felt or experienced something like this in his life.
This piece was really good Tommy. I liked how you talked about society and how unfair it is sometimes. Next time, just work on your sentence fluency and what you start your sentences with like prepositions, subordinate conjunctions, gerands, etc to make it more interesting. Nice job though, I liked it! This really makes you want to read the book.
